` backtick / grave accent on your keyboardThe backtick is used for inline code and code blocks in Markdown. Its location changes with your keyboard layout - use the highlighted key and shortcut below.

US ENGLISH
Press the first key in the number row: directly below Esc and to the left of 1. It shares a key with the tilde.

GERMAN
Hold Shift and press the ´ key immediately to the left of Backspace, then press Space. The grave is a composing key: it waits to accent the next letter, pressing Space tells it to output a plain ` instead.

Hold AltGr and press 7, the key labelled è on the number row.

Windows 11’s optional French Standard layout is different: use AltGr + è, then Space.

Linux: These same shortcuts normally apply when you use the corresponding US English, German, or French layout. Your desktop environment’s selected input source is what matters.
